20 years ago, I thought businesses grew because they had a brilliant product.
I was wrong.
Businesses don't fail because founders work too little. They fail because they work on the wrong things.
Since then, I've worked alongside hundreds of founders, leadership teams, and innovative SMEs, and I've learned something far more important. Businesses rarely stop growing because they run out of ideas. They stop growing because they run out of clarity. Not clarity about their technology. Not clarity about their market.
Clarity about themselves. What they're trying to achieve? What's getting in the way? What needs fixing first? And what can wait.
That's where I come in.
I don't have all the answers.
In fact, I'd be worried if anyone claimed they did. The founders I work with know far more than I ever will about their product, their science, their engineering, or their technology. They’re the experts.
My expertise is different.
I help them see the business. They can't always see themselves. When you're working 12 hour plus days, juggling customers, investors, staff, cash flow and the 100 decisions every founder faces every day, perspective is the first casualty.
My job is to slow the thinking down long enough for better decisions to emerge. Not by telling people what to do. But by asking better questions.
Sometimes they're uncomfortable questions. Often, they're the questions everyone else has politely avoided asking. But they're usually the ones that unlock progress.
I'm not interested in sticky plasters.
One thing I've noticed over the years is that businesses are very good at treating symptoms.
“We need more sales.”
“We need more investment.”
“We need better marketing.”
Maybe.
Or maybe that's simply where the pain is showing. Quite often what looks like a sales problem is actually a positioning problem. A positioning problem turns out to be a leadership issue. A leadership issue becomes a strategic challenge, and underneath all that sits something much simpler.
The business has lost focus. You cannot scale chaos.
I like getting underneath the symptoms. That's why clients often describe me as someone who gets to the heart of the issue quickly. Not because I know their business better than they do. But because I've seen the patterns hundreds of times before.
Growing businesses don't need more complexity.
They need better foundations.
Over the years I've worked with businesses developing world first technologies, manufacturers, software companies, life science businesses, creative agencies and professional services firms to name but a few.
Different sectors, but remarkably similar challenges.
Founders wearing 10 different hats. Leadership teams pulling in different directions. Business plans that nobody looks at. Financial forecasts created for investors but never used internally. People working incredibly hard without always knowing whether they're working on the right things.
I realised I was solving the same underlying problems over and over again, just with different companies. That led me to develop the Grown-Up Business Difference™.
Not another business model. Not another acronym. Simply a practical way of helping businesses build the foundations they need before they try to grow and scale.
Because fast growth and scaling amplifies everything. If your business is healthy, growth accelerates success. If it isn't, growth simply magnifies the cracks.
Simple beats complicated.
One of the biggest myths in business is that better planning means producing bigger documents.
It doesn't.
I've seen strategic plans that run to 100 pages and achieve absolutely nothing. I've also seen a single sheet of paper transform the way a leadership team thinks.
That's why I developed my Three Pieces of Paper™ (3PoP) approach. Everything that matters should be visible, understandable, and actionable.
If it doesn't, it's just paperwork.
Coaching isn't about motivation.
It's about thinking.
People sometimes ask whether I'm a coach, mentor, advisor or non-exec director. The answer is yes. Each role is slightly different. The way I work isn't.
Whether I'm coaching a founder, facilitating a leadership team, challenging a board, or supporting an ambitious SME through growth, I'm doing the same thing.
I'm supportive. But I'm not there to tell people they're doing a great job if they aren't. Clients often describe me as their critical friend.
Because I know that avoiding difficult conversations rarely helps businesses grow.
Results matter.
Everything I've described sounds good in theory.
The reason I still believe in this approach is because I've seen what happens when businesses put it into practice.
Those numbers matter. But they're not the first thing I think about. What stays with me are the conversations.
Why I still love this work
After 20 years, I still find growing businesses fascinating. Not because every business is different It's because the people are different.
That's the moment I enjoy most, helping people navigate that transition.
So… this is me.
I'm not the loudest voice in the room, nor am I interested in management jargon or fashionable business theories. I won't hand you a glossy report and disappear. But I will ask the questions that matter.
I'll challenge where it's needed and help simplify the complicated. I'll help you build a business that's capable of scaling, not just hoping that it will. Whether I'm working as a coach, facilitator, mentor or non-exec director, that's what I bring.
And a genuine belief that most businesses already have the potential to grow. Sometimes they just need someone to help them see it.
