When a New CEO Arrives: What Has to Happen Fast

Last updated June 23, 2026
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

So we have yet another Prime Minister coming into the job.

How would you feel if you were about to see your seventh CEO in ten years? Each one arrives with a slightly—sometimes radically—different view of the organisation. Momentum is lost, confidence drifts, and people start to wait it out rather than lean in. Whether you’re an employee, a supplier, or an investor, the question becomes the same: is this one going to be any different?

For the incoming CEO, the window to answer that question is short. You don’t get time to “settle in” anymore. You are being assessed from day one—on clarity, direction, and intent. The first job is simple, but not easy: articulate the story. Is it a reset, or a refinement? Either can work. What matters is that it is coherent, credible, and immediately understood by everyone who matters—employees, customers, suppliers, and stakeholders alike.

Get that story wrong, or take too long to land it, and confidence erodes quickly. People fill the silence with their own assumptions. Suppliers hesitate. Customers hold back. Internally, energy drops. You don’t get a second chance at a first narrative. The message needs to be clear enough to align people and strong enough to move them.

If you are an internal appointment, you start with an advantage—and a risk. You know the history, the politics, and the reasons previous strategies did or didn’t land. But familiarity can breed hesitation. Your challenge is to turn knowledge into momentum, and to get everyone pulling in the same direction without reopening old debates.

If you are coming in from the outside, the dynamic is different. You will get a brief honeymoon period, but it is shorter than you think. The board and shareholders may give you some latitude, but employees will be watching for signals—what changes, what stays, and how decisions are made. You need to assess quickly, decide quickly, and communicate even faster. Above all, you need a plan.

And that plan cannot drift. We’ve all seen strategies promised and delayed, losing credibility before they ever land. Your priority is to make the plan visible and tangible: the opportunities, the risks, the constraints, and the direction of travel. Start with a clear, compelling ambition—a single line that captures attention. Then paint the picture of where the organisation is heading over the next three years. Make it real enough that people can see their place in it.

From there, bring it back to execution. What happens in the next 12 months? What are the critical priorities? And, crucially, what happens in the next 90 days? Because that is where belief is built. When people understand what matters now, they can translate it into action—what needs to happen this week, not “sometime soon.” That’s how alignment turns into progress.

New leadership doesn’t create impact through position—it creates it through clarity and pace. If you want people to believe this time is different, then the story, the plan, and the early actions all have to say the same thing: we know where we’re going, and we’ve already started moving.
