Two years after I published my Don’t Ask Don’t Get blog post, I’m still amazed that it’s such a new concept to many of the people I meet.
The most surprising thing is that it hasn’t even crossed their mind to ask for anything at all. And for those who do think about asking for something, they don’t – they dismiss it.
Why?
Some are frightened of being told ‘no’; fear of rejection is so strong, others don’t know how to ask or just don’t think it’s the right thing to do. And those that feel this way are missing out in so many ways. There’s lots of rewards when you get a ‘yes’. You won’t get a yes every time but the more you ask the more you’ll get a ‘yes’.
Why am I writing about this again? Well, first I happened to come across Amanda Palmer’s TED Talk called The Art of Asking – it's only 13 minutes long and well worth watching. Secondly, I think it’s crucial that everyone is confident enough to ask.
And here’s something else you can do – try Noah Kagan Coffee Challenge.
If you’re still not asking enough shouldn’t you set it as your next 30 day challenge? Ask for something every day and record what you get. Be realistic with what you ask for otherwise you set yourself up to fail. Good luck.
