Business Transformation in One Hour a Day

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

As a business owner you will fall into one of two camps: you will work a lot more than the average UK employee or a lot less.

Business Matters magazine found, on average small business owners work 17 days of overtime compared with their employed counterparts.

So, if you want to work less but get more done, how do you do it?

The trick is to focus on the important stuff; working on the business! I know you've heard it all before but I'd like you to try this…..

If you work an 8 hour day, I'd like you to take one hour everyday - 60 minutes of concentrated effort to ONLY work on the business.

That’s 12.5% of your working day when you will be totally focused on the business. For the remaining 84% of the day, you can happily work in the business!

A few points before you start….

  • Schedule your ‘one hour’ when you are most productive. For me that is first thing in the morning before I do anything else. If I'm planning (I'm a pen and paper gir)l I don't even turn the computer on to get distracted.
  • Tell your team what you are going to do and you are not to be disturbed unless the building is burning down. A good tip is to wear a pair of head or earphones then everybody knows you're busy.
  • Wherever you’re going to work get rid of all distractions.
  • Plan what you are going to work BEFORE you start. Plan a week ahead; 5 x one hours tasks so you are ready to start for the minute you sit down. This also means you’ll do the one hour every day!
  • Set a timer for 55 minutes to give you 5 minutes to complete what you were doing at the end.
  • Just start. Try it. Employ some concentrated effort on a task and 55 minutes later you’ll be amazed how much you have done. Tomorrow you'll be ready to do the next step in your process
  • This works brilliantly when you break a big project down into small bite sized chunks that you can get done in an hour. It's no good writing down a task such as ‘re-write the business plan’ in one hour that's just not going to work; small chunks is certainly the way to go.
  • As soon as you start & finish a task in an hour you’ll be on a roll, ready for the next task tomorrow. It might take you 2 weeks to complete a 10-hour project because you will have got it done rather than trying to cram it all into one day and then failing spectacularly.

If you'd like to save another hour a day I have lots of tips on how to save time and my e-book 21 Ways to Go Home an Hour Early is available for free download.
